Nigeria runs an import-export dependent economy. The country derives 75% of its consumption from its imports. Its economy also thrives on its export of crude oil and liquefied natural gas to countries across the globe. Water transportation is the means through which the country conducts these imports and exports. The high presence of maritime activities in Nigeria has increased the incidence of maritime piracy and other maritime offences which now threatens national security, economic prosperity, and the safety of lives and properties of international merchants across its territorial and surrounding global waters.
